The congratulations went by voicemail. Standing at an Ohio Republican Party podium, Vivek Ramaswamy tells supporters he called Amy Acton and left a message acknowledging her victory.
Then he asks something of the people who had worked to elect him: "All of us in this room should be rooting for the success of her administration."
LOCAL 12's upload of the concession speech reached about 73,000 views in half a day, far beyond the Cincinnati station's usual audience for a regular video. The speech marks the end of a governor's race that returned the office to Democrats for the first time since 2006.
Acton, a physician, became widely known as Ohio's health director during the pandemic, working alongside Republican Governor Mike DeWine. Ramaswamy entered this race after his presidential campaign and with Donald Trump's endorsement.
The speech acknowledges the bitterness of the contest without revisiting its arguments. Ramaswamy thanks voters, campaign workers and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, then brings running mate Rob McColley onstage alongside his wife, Apoorva.
His concession is not a withdrawal from his political convictions. Near the end, Ramaswamy says he has serious concerns about the country's direction and pledges to keep defending the American ideals he describes. Acceptance of Acton's victory and disagreement about the country's future sit side by side in his closing remarks.
