JD Vance points to the Iran war; Donald Trump points to rising petrol prices. In LBC's post-election discussion, Washington correspondent Simon Marks examines the distance between those explanations for Republican losses, even though the issues are closely connected.
Speaking with Ben Kentish, Marks describes Vance and Donald Trump Jr. blaming the war for the result. He contrasts that with Trump's emphasis on fuel costs, interpreting the different accounts as evidence of tension within the Republican leadership.
The interview adds a practical question to that dispute over responsibility: what can Democrats actually do with their congressional gains?
Marks expects intensified investigations into senior administration officials, including Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. He reports that Hegseth has dismissed proposed impeachment articles as a sham. Marks considers removing Trump through impeachment unlikely given the Senate arithmetic, drawing a distinction between opening proceedings and securing a conviction.
On legislation, Marks highlights Hakeem Jeffries' emphasis on affordability, particularly groceries and fuel. But control of Congress does not eliminate the president's ability to block bills. Marks says Trump is prepared to become "Mr. Veto", setting up a substantial obstacle to Democratic promises on household costs.
