Jararaca, taipan and diamondbacks: six snakes milked at the Kentucky Reptile Zoo

The nonprofit venom lab posted one extraction a day, and a Brazilian pit viper from October 7 drew more than 60,000 views in its first 24 hours.

A usual day at the Kentucky Reptile Zoo's channel brings in around a quarter of a million views. This stretch ran lighter than that, though the uploads kept coming at a steady clip: six venom extractions in six days, each one a different snake.

The lineup reads like a field guide to things you should not pick up. A Mojave rattlesnake opened the run on October 1, followed by an eastern copperhead, a pair of eastern diamondbacks, an inland taipan from Australia, an eastern cottonmouth and, last, a jararaca, the South American pit viper. The zoo is a nonprofit venom lab, and it describes its venoms as going to researchers around the world. That is the point of every one of these clips.

The diamondbacks gathered the biggest total of the week, passing 100,000 views. Under that video, commenters keep circling the same questions: what happens to the venom, why do it at all, and does it hurt the snakes. Several viewers answer one another, explaining that the milking is harmless and the venom feeds lifesaving work. One curious soul simply asks about the handler's finger.

The jararaca, barely a day old, is the one moving fastest now. The taipan, perhaps the most fearsome snake of the set, drew the smallest crowd.

Around 1,000 new subscribers arrived over the week. Among similar animal channels, Elie the hallway cat ran above its usual pace, while Tail Talks and Feelory were quieter than normal.
