  1. 2:09Tyler remembers playing Ocarina of Time in high school, while Johnny recalls experiencing it as an adult.
  2. 3:02GameFan previews and original gold Collector's Edition boxes bring the game's early anticipation back into view.
  3. 10:00Johnny says he declined Nintendo's New York preview invitation because he preferred to experience the game at home.
  4. 12:51Tyler names Majora's Mask his favorite Zelda, describing its relationship to Ocarina as a fever dream.
  5. 17:53Both recall the Water Temple with apprehension before inviting viewers to share their own Zelda memories.

HappyConsoleGamer host Johnny brings out the old GameFan magazines, and Tyler has something equally personal to show: the gold Ocarina of Time box he preordered for the Nintendo 64. Anticipating the Switch 2 remake becomes an excuse to revisit the objects, and the memories, that survived from the original release.

Their discussion was the channel's only new upload this week and has reached roughly 104,000 views. Tyler remembers playing during high school; Johnny was already an adult. "This game came out at the perfect time in my life," Tyler says. The magazines let them look back even further, to the previews that made three-dimensional Hyrule something to imagine before it was something to explore.

Johnny also says he declined Nintendo's invitation to a New York preview, preferring to experience the game at home. Tyler complicates the nostalgia by producing his Majora's Mask cartridge and naming that stranger, more unsettling adventure his favorite Zelda. They can agree on at least one reservation about returning to Ocarina: the Water Temple.

The comments extend the conversation rather neatly. Viewers remember buying the game as Christmas presents, taking a train to collect it and finding it under the tree. Others never owned an N64 and are preparing for a first playthrough. Tyler's preference for Majora's Mask finds company, too.

Across the channel, subscribers held steady while the catalogue added about 190,000 views. Today's viewing is below its usual level, though the Zelda conversation remains its busiest upload. Among nearby gaming channels, Game Sack drew a similar weekly audience, while ENDYMIONtv had a substantially larger week. Johnny's older RPG discussions also continue to find viewers, particularly his starting-point guide and the Super Nintendo ranking with Andrew.

What viewers say

  • I'm 56 and never had a N64 so this will be my first time, I'll probably spend a lot of time just walking around enjoying the scenery.
  • I was 16 and working my first job. I bought Ocarina of Time amd Turok 2 for my brothers for Christmas.
  • I was 18 when OoT came out and I took a train to Newcastle from my home town to pick up Zelda in November 1998. It was truly a magical time that left an indelible mark on my gaming experience. I loved it!

  • The way the guest described Majora’s Mask is perfect. It’s like a liminal version of Ocarina. It’s comfortable and uncomfortable at the same time.

It’s my favorite game of all time so please, Nintendo, give it the remake treatment.

  • Tyler is a great conversation partner and I would like him to know that I, too, actually prefer Majora's Mask over Ocarina of Time.
He's not the only one. ^^

  • Age wise, I'm between Johnny and Tyler and grew up with and played every mainline Zelda except Ocarina. This will be my first play through, and I can't wait.
