Vancouver landlords fined $90K after dividing home into 21 rooms for 17 tenants
The house is vacant. A property approved as a single-family home with a secondary suite became a rooming house, and an order to vacate cited zoning, building, electrical and fire violations, Global News reports.
Kristen Robinson's report examines the East Vancouver property, where a Residential Tenancy Branch inspection found approximately 21 sleeping rooms, along with unpermitted bathrooms and fixtures. The enforcement findings said the owners had failed to maintain legally required health, safety and housing standards.
The distinction matters: this was not simply a case of many people sharing an address. Inspectors identified unauthorized alterations, and the city ordered the property emptied.
The report drew nearly a quarter of a million views before its first day was over, far above the channel's usual start for a Short. Its comment section was also substantially busier than usual. Viewers raised questions about fire safety, ways to report unsafe rentals and the pressure housing costs put on tenants.
Robinson also visits addresses in Richmond seeking the landlords' response, but gets no answer. By the end of her report, the East Vancouver house is empty and listed for sale.
