Dan Campbell visited Jack Campbell and his family in the hospital Sunday night. At Monday's press conference, the Detroit Lions coach offered a limited but encouraging update: "I got to go see him last night. It was good. It was positive."
The linebacker and team captain suffered a neck injury during Sunday's win over the Minnesota Vikings. Campbell did not provide further medical details, but asked people to continue praying.
FOX 2 Detroit's press conference clip reached about 57,000 views in its opening eight hours, far beyond the roughly 2,000 its regular videos usually receive over a full first day. The station's separate live update and interview with former Lions team doctor Solomon Cogan also drew unusually large audiences. Cogan is not treating Campbell.
The coach said Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell had reached out to check on Jack. "This league is highly competitive, but it is a brotherhood, and it just puts things in perspective," he said.
Questions also turned to the practical demands of preparing for another game while caring about an injured teammate. Campbell discussed linebacker depth, but his most personal remarks concerned Jack's standing in the locker room: the effort, character and respect behind his selection as captain.
"There's not a man on this team that doesn't respect Jack Campbell, you know, and care about him."
