Who steals a deer head from a pizza place? According to surveillance video from September 21, a man at Night Owl Pizza & Drinks on Mill Avenue in Tempe finished his beers, closed his tab, waited for the shift change, then lifted a mule deer head from a bathroom hallway and pedaled off with it in the basket of his electric bike. The head once hung in a partner's grandfather's cabin, and the bar's reward is generous: a gift card, merchandise and what amounts to free pizza for a year. Of the station's newest uploads, it is one of the few still drawing a steady stream of viewers.
The heavier stories drew bigger first crowds. The station's report on a lab worker's death from suspected pneumonic plague at a Siberian research institute was its most watched new upload. A day earlier, FOX 10 Talks asked Dr. Ashish Jha what that death might mean, and he said plainly that much is still unknown. The station also covered protests at Cornell, where students and faculty are calling on President Michael Kotlikoff to resign over the university's handling of a rape case, and where Sally Yates will lead an independent review.
The channel gained about 1,000 subscribers over the seven days and ran a little below its usual daily pace. Among local news stations of similar size, East Idaho News, CBS Chicago and NBC 6 South Florida had busy weeks. FOX 5 Washington DC and FOX 2 Detroit were quieter, and FOX 10 sat between the two groups, with roughly 3.3 million views for the week and a deer head still missing in Tempe.
