After the failed Tennessee execution, FOX 10 Phoenix viewers argue over the method
The report on Christa Pike and the resignation of Frank Strada closed its first day far above the station's usual, and a Nantucket air ambulance search drew even more viewers.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 71,681 views a day, 27 times a normal first day on this channel (2,631).
Failed Tennessee execution leaves inmate critical, official resigns | FOX 10 Phoenix
Christa Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital at a Tennessee prison, and FOX 10 Phoenix's report on the aftermath has now had a full day to travel. As we reported here, the station gave the story an Arizona angle. Frank Strada, the Tennessee corrections commissioner who resigned after the attempt, was previously a top official at the Arizona Department of Corrections. During his time there, in 2022, staff struggled to find veins during the executions of Clarence Dixon and Frank Atwood.
The report ended its first day above 70,000 views, many times what a new FOX 10 clip usually reaches. The comment section moved even faster, about nineteen times busier than the channel's usual first day. Most of it is about method. Viewers ask why a state cannot carry out a lethal injection reliably, point to how veterinarians put animals down, and suggest the firing squad instead. Others bring up the 1995 murder that put Pike on death row. A few wonder whether Strada stepped down by his own choice.
The segment also gives the wider picture. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has halted all executions until at least the end of the year while an independent investigation runs. Capital punishment scholar Corinna Barrett Lain notes that in earlier cases, inmates survived only when executioners failed to secure an IV line. That makes Pike's case, as the report puts it, virtually unprecedented.
Even so, the Tennessee story was not the station's biggest of the day. A Coast Guard search for a Latitude Air Ambulance jet off Nantucket, where a debris field was found on the seabed, drew close to three times as many views and kept the whole channel running ahead of its usual pace.
