Dooly County's sheriff on Vienna: 'hope you don't get hit by gunfire'
Sheriff Craig Peavy's account of what his officers found at a shooting that left two men dead and 35 people injured traveled far beyond 11Alive's usual Atlanta audience, and a second interview with him followed close behind.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 97,195 views a day, 35 times a normal first day on this channel (2,754).
Sheriff describes Vienna mass shooting scene
"You just have to keep doing what you're doing and hope you don't get hit by gunfire." That is how Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy describes the job his officers faced when they arrived at a shooting in Vienna, Georgia, that left two men dead and 35 people injured.
Vienna is a small town, the county seat of Dooly County in south-central Georgia, well over two hours' drive from the Atlanta newsroom that posted the clip. Even so, the sheriff's description of the scene drew more than 60,000 views in its first eleven hours. A new upload on 11Alive normally finishes its whole first day with fewer than three thousand.
It was not the station's only interview with Peavy. In a second clip he talks about what comes next, saying his department will "pursue and try to have justice." That video ran nearly as far ahead of the usual. Together, the two made the Vienna shooting the story of the day on a channel whose other recent uploads covered the Dream's playoff win over the Liberty and a Falcons preview before Monday Night Football.
The questions in the comments are the ones the sheriff has not answered yet: many viewers ask whether anyone has been caught, and whether there is a description of the shooters.

Two interviews with the same sheriff, posted on the same day, and both ran far beyond what a new 11Alive video usually reaches.
