A Nobu Malibu chef killed on Pacific Coast Highway, reported by Chris Wolfe for KTLA 5
The Los Angeles station's report on the crash drew more viewers in under a day than anything else it posted, with the Bouquet Fire in northern Los Angeles County close behind.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 183,119 views a day, 13 times a normal first day on this channel (13,768).
Man killed after teen driver slams into him on PCH in Malibu
A chef at Nobu Malibu was killed when a teen driver crashed into his vehicle on Pacific Coast Highway. KTLA's Chris Wolfe reported the story, and his short report has become the station's most watched new upload since the weekend.
It passed 170,000 views in about 21 hours. A new KTLA 5 report usually ends its whole first day at around 14,000.
The report is brief and plain. The station's description gives the victim's job and the place, and little more. The comment section is large and angry, much of it focused on what should happen next and why no one has yet been charged, the point several viewers keep raising.
It was a heavy Sunday for the station. Jillian Smukler's report on crews gaining containment of the Bouquet Fire, which broke out Saturday afternoon northeast of Santa Clarita and was still burning Sunday morning, also ran far beyond a usual first day. It reached more than 80,000 views in its first fourteen hours. Both stories led a channel that, as we reported here, had spent the days before on an October heat wave.

The numbers
The crash report and the fire update both ran far ahead of KTLA 5's usual first day, and the channel's daily views rose with them.
