Piers Morgan, the Road Hole and a hotel that nearly caught his tee shot

A day earlier Gareth Bale sent his ball into the beer garden of The Jigger, as the Alfred Dunhill Links turned St Andrews into a celebrity proving ground.

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is the one week a year when the pros share the fairways with amateurs, and on the DP World Tour channel the amateurs got the biggest crowds. Fourteen uploads went up, and the most watched was Piers Morgan on the 17th at the Old Course, the Road Hole, where the tee shot has to carry the corner of the Old Course Hotel. The description says he nearly put it in the hotel, much to the annoyance of his playing partner Kevin Pietersen, the former England cricketer. It has passed 740,000 views.

Gareth Bale, the former Wales and Real Madrid forward, had his own St Andrews moment the day before: his tee shot landed in the beer garden of The Jigger, the pub beside that same 17th hole. And the newest clip, Casey Jarvis's amateur partner hitting what the title calls the "WORST opening tee shot ever?", is gathering views faster than anything else on the channel right now.

The golf itself was there too, with round-by-round highlights from the tournament's 25th edition, where Robert MacIntyre came back to defend his title. Viewers who know the course traded tips on where to aim off the Road Hole tee.

Daily views ran a little under the channel's usual pace, yet among similar sports channels nobody added more views this week. GCN Racing had the liveliest stretch relative to its normal, and Nathan Florence picked up the most new subscribers.

What viewers say

  • I played the Old Course a couple of years ago, and on the 17th tee I was thinking I'd aim for the spire of the church. The caddy stopped me and said: "aim for the O of HOTEL". Seemed way too risky to me, but it ended right in the centre of the fairway.
