Looksmaxxing explained: 'The Beauty Premium for Gen-Z Males' carries Donna's pause

The seven-week-old essay has passed 217,000 views, voiced in part by actor Christian Menza.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Among the reaction and commentary channels close to her size, Donna has the calmest stretch right now. Rachel Louise and Austin Sweatt are each drawing more than a million views a day, Kat Blaque is running above her usual pace, and Donna, with no new uploads in seven days, is ticking along at almost exactly her normal rhythm.

That rhythm comes mostly from one video. "The Beauty Premium for Gen-Z Males" went up 47 days ago and is still bringing in the bulk of the channel's daily views. It takes on looksmaxxing, the online trend of young men working obsessively on their appearance, and asks whether something about today's world has pushed a generation to rank looks so highly. The description points to research on infants preferring attractive faces, and a male voice actor, Christian Menza, reads part of it.

Appearance is a thread that runs through the channel. A 2024 essay, "Matt Rife: The Disadvantages of Being Attractive," asked whether being the "hot comedian" helped or hurt the TikTok star when the internet turned on him over a joke. Further back, "The Mysterious Hate of Anne Hathaway" revisited the Hathahaters of the early 2010s, and more than two years on it still picks up a steady handful of viewers every day.

The about page notes the channel once went by Psych IRL, and the old name still fits: these are essays about why people look at other people the way they do. Subscribers held steady through the pause, at 553,000.
