Zombie ants and penicillin: The Fascinating Map of Fungi carries Domain of Science
Dominic Walliman posted nothing new, and a 20-minute tour of an entire kingdom of life, now past 900,000 views, does most of the channel's daily work.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
The Fascinating Map of Fungi
Domain of Science, the channel Dominic Walliman built on the modest-sounding mission of mapping all human knowledge, took a week off from new uploads. The map that kept the lights on is one from more than a year ago: "The Fascinating Map of Fungi."
It is now past 900,000 views, and it brings in a good share of what the whole channel draws on an ordinary day. The chapters explain why it travels so well. It moves from mycorrhiza, the partnerships that nearly all plants depend on, to zombie ants, antibiotics, statins, fermentation and the fungi living on us, before closing on the fungal tree of life. In the description Walliman writes that he learned a lot making it, and the map reads like someone enjoying a field that rarely gets top billing.
The others in the momentum list move far more slowly. One is the map of all 88 constellations, drawn because, as he puts it, he wanted to learn them. The other is a question that grew out of his 17 physics maps: will physics ever be complete?
The channel's daily views are right at their usual level, and subscriber totals are steady. Among the science channels near its size, Chris Boden is having by far the biggest stretch, while BBC Earth Science and Undecided with Matt Ferrell are running well above their norms. Domain of Science keeps a gentler, slower pace, carried by its maps.
