Earth's missing water passes a million views in under two days

A short arguing the planet holds less water than most people picture joined a planet-by-planet flight-time question and a look at Earth's real shape.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Among the science channels nearest Beyond the Observable Universe in size, the big stretch belongs to Scott Manley, running at several times his usual daily pace, while Max Velocity and Reed Timmer are a little busier than normal and Animagraffs is quieter. The physics-animation channel did not need a peer to make its own noise, though.

Three shorts went up, and the newest is the one that moved. "Earth Has Less Water Than You Think" drew about 600,000 views in its first day and has passed 1.3 million in under two. The idea is a favorite of science explainers: gather all the oceans, rivers and ice into one ball, and it looks surprisingly small beside the planet. The other two kept the channel's usual approach of simple questions, big answers. One asks how long it would take to fly around each planet. The other asks what shape the real Earth is, and the answer is not quite a perfect sphere.

The older shorts are still doing well. "The Rarest Planet Ever Found," three weeks old, has passed 25 million views, and "What Actually Rains on Each Planet?" is past 14 million. Both still bring in hundreds of thousands of views a day.

Subscribers are arriving at roughly ten thousand a day, on a channel just past two million. The man behind it describes himself as a physics graduate with two decades in the field who wants to make the universe easy to follow, and he also pledges part of any income to orphaned children.
