Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: The Getaway | Streaming December 4 on Disney+

Greg Heffley has a perfectly workable holiday plan: stay in his room and play games. His parents have booked a tropical vacation instead. The trailer for "Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: The Getaway" makes a brisk case for why he might have preferred the room.

Disney's upload reached roughly 371,000 views in its first 11 hours, far beyond the channel's usual start for short videos. The comment section is also already much busier than a typical first day, with viewers debating the franchise's return to Christmas and comparing the trailer with Jeff Kinney's book.

The animated preview starts with a Thanksgiving turkey flying across the dinner table before Susan announces Christmas at Isla de Corales. Greg's objection is succinct: "The holidays bring out the worst in us." A change of scenery doesn't appear to help.

At the resort, wildlife intrudes on his peace, a snorkeling outing becomes a feeding frenzy, and the family's troubles expand to wrong luggage, stolen clothes and a golf-cart pursuit by security. The trailer keeps the holiday trappings but swaps a wintry setting for a vacation steadily coming apart.

Several commenters ask why another Wimpy Kid film is set at Christmas; others point out that the holiday trip belongs to the original book's premise. One reader says they're rereading The Getaway and recognizes its chaos in the preview. For Greg, the promised escape is looking suspiciously like more things to complain about in his diary.
