The Liberation | Official Trailer | Bleecker Street
"You carry a lot of weight around, don't you?" A seemingly sympathetic question becomes an invitation to leave everything behind in the trailer for The Liberation, starring Carrie Coon and Lily James.
Bleecker Street's upload reached about 166,000 views in seven hours, an unusually fast start compared with the channel's usual short uploads. The film, directed by Guy Nattiv, is billed for a theatrical release this winter.
Coon plays Rita, a woman haunted by her past who finds a possible escape in Ricki, the spiritual leader played by James. The trailer moves from an office encounter and a family dinner into communal chanting, rituals and emotional release. Then Rita packs a bag. When her family follows her down the street, she screams for them to stay away.
The film's description adds the complication that gives this more than a simple leaving-home premise: Rita's daughters, played by Bella Ramsey and Odessa Young, arrive at the all-female commune and become drawn to it themselves. The place she chose instead of her family becomes somewhere she may need to protect them from.
The trailer closes its emotional arc with Coon tearfully repeating, "I am ready for my liberation." By then, the distance between that promise and what her family sees has become the central question.
