Is This the Worst Time Ever to Buy a House in the UK? Damien ranks every year
His single upload of the week sets UK house prices against median pay and mortgage costs, and passed 800,000 views in five days.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Is This the Worst Time Ever to Buy a House in the UK?
One video, big audience. Damien posted a single upload this week, keeping to the weekly schedule his about line promises, and "Is This the Worst Time Ever to Buy a House in the UK?" did the work of several. It drew close to 300,000 views on its first day and has since passed 800,000.
The video is a patient walk through British housing affordability. Damien sets average home values against median salaries, follows the price-to-earnings ratio over the decades, brings interest rates into it and finally ranks every year from best to worst for a buyer. One finding the description highlights: once inflation is stripped out, prices have actually fallen in real terms, which is not the conclusion most people expect from a title like that.
The comment section reads like a seminar. Several viewers praise the charts, singling out the one showing how far each year sits from the average. A self-described mortgage advisor of 15 years weighs in, and the most debated comment argues that falling prices would be no bad thing, since the next house would be cheaper too. Others want more on the table: net pay instead of gross, rents beside mortgages, or the cost of groceries and energy in each era. A throwaway line from Damien about leaving soon and never coming back has also become a small running joke.
Over the whole week the channel held close to its usual pace, adding about 4,000 subscribers to reach 419,000. Behind the house video, his September look at Vanguard's new all-in-one ETF is still drawing steady interest.
Among the money and business channels near his size, Stefano Narducci and The Caleb Hammer Show had the busiest weeks, CNBC International Live ran well above its usual pace, and Pace Morby was quieter than normal.

That is the best legwork and magic with graphs to tell a story I've seen from this corner of YouTube!

I've been a mortgage advisor for 15 years and I can categorically say this video is absolutely brilliant. It so clearly demonstrates the factors that affect home owners perception of affordability and clearly shows that both those who bought in the 80's and those buying today had it tough but that the reasons behind the pain were different.
More people need to see content like this. I always try to clearly explain what is going on so that there is true understanding and this is exactly what this video does.
More like this please, it is a truly great video.@michaelcole3998See it on YouTubeIt’s even worse when you take net earnings as opposed to gross
@ianabbott3421See it on YouTubeOne of the best videos you've ever made!
@TheEnduringCitizenSee it on YouTubeJust popping in to say this was a f*cking great video. Well done mate, possibly the best explanation of this topic I've ever seen
@thereturnticketSee it on YouTubeIt would be interesting to factor in the cost of living (groceries, utilities, petrol) for each period, to really get an idea of how affordable monthly repayments are.
@sdv-dofSee it on YouTubeThe thing missing from this entire picture is median rents.. just because it's more expensive doesn't mean it's not still the best choice on offer.
