El-Sayed urges an end to U.S. tariffs on Canada
CTV News puts Michigan's senator-elect at the center of its report on whether Democratic gains can bring relief across the border.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 137,252 views a day, 69 times a normal first day on this channel (1,988).
Will a Democratic majority in Congress help end the Canada-U.S. trade war?
Michigan's auto industry and shoppers' bills are at the heart of Abdul El-Sayed's argument for ending the tariff war with Canada. In Joy Malbon's Washington report for CTV News, the Democratic senator-elect says the policy harms his state's car industry and raises consumer prices.
"That has to end," he says.
The report, titled "Will a Democratic majority in Congress help end the Canada-U.S. trade war?", drew roughly 147,000 views in just over a day, far beyond the channel's usual start for a Short. CTV also posted a separate clip of El-Sayed's tariff remarks, which attracted an unusually large audience of its own.
The new element here is a call from the American side of the border. Earlier CTV coverage featured Canadian politicians weighing what the Democratic gains might mean; Malbon's report brings in an incoming Michigan senator explicitly pushing to halt the tariffs. It establishes that intention, rather than announcing a deal or a timetable for relief.
CTV's Canadian budget broadcasts and Tom Mulcair's commentary on the post-election trade outlook also drew much stronger starts than usual. But El-Sayed's remarks give this report its clearest point: he says he is willing to work with Donald Trump on shared priorities, including healthcare, ending the war and stopping the tariffs.
