Pierre Poilievre sees an opportunity to press Washington. Doug Ford supplies the caution. In CTV National News's November 4 broadcast, the Canadian response to Democratic congressional victories quickly turns from election results to the trade barriers still facing businesses.
"Everybody hates the tariffs. We've got to use that goodwill to pressure for tariff-free trade," Poilievre says. Ford's assessment is blunter: "Let's be under no illusion that this trade war is done. It's not done."
Reporting from Ottawa, Judy Trinh and Vassy Kapelos examine the implications for Canada, including concerns in the auto sector. Canadian officials say their focus has not changed. The broadcast then brings the economic question home through small-business pressures and affordability concerns ahead of François-Philippe Champagne's federal budget.
The full bulletin drew about 85,000 views in its first day, roughly seventy times CTV's usual start for regular videos. A separate Canada-U.S. relations report also drew an unusually large audience.
But Washington is not the bulletin's only point of interest. Near the end, Heather Wright visits Horizon Aircraft in Lindsay, Ontario, to report on the Cavorite X7, a hybrid-electric aircraft being developed to take off vertically and fly like an airplane.
The medical promise is practical: reaching remote communities without needing a conventional runway. Wright shows testing of a half-scale prototype and reports on a planned full-scale model. Constance Lake First Nation has signed an agreement to explore purchasing the aircraft for links to medical centres. CTV's separate Short about the project also had an unusually strong start, giving this edition a second point of interest far from the tariff negotiations.

The numbers
The full national bulletin and the separate Canada-U.S. report both ran well above CTV's usual first-day audience for regular videos. The aircraft Short also stood out within its own format.
