Allies of Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro expected Donald Trump to offer political asylum and take action against Brazilian judicial authorities. Instead, they received more limited help with staying in the United States, political analyst Edilene Lopes reports on Brazil's CNN Brasil.
Bolsonaro, a Liberal Party senator representing Rio de Janeiro and a son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, appears in archive footage during the segment. Lopes says his allies had hoped for U.S. measures against Supreme Federal Court justices Alexandre de Moraes and Cristiano Zanin, as well as asylum for the senator rather than temporary permission to remain.
The report says Trump helped facilitate the stay of Bolsonaro and his family, but an on-screen caption also says the U.S. president has no plans to meet the senator. Lopes describes Trump as focused on America's midterm elections and his own economic and political interests, rather than delivering the broader support Bolsonaro's allies anticipated.
The discussion then turns from Washington to Brazilian voters. Presenter Débora asks how Bolsonaro's departure could affect public opinion and his political standing. Lopes says parties and polling organizations are conducting internal tracking surveys, while public polling, including research by Quaest, is expected to assess the episode's impact.
Lopes describes a view emerging in that research: Bolsonaro should either return to fulfill his Senate mandate or relinquish it. The segment does not present a published polling percentage for that position.
