Cheesecake was supposed to give George some practice, not a reason to fear the repair bill. Cleetus McFarland's newly bought rotary Datsun delivers both in a track-testing video that has drawn about a million views since yesterday.
The car arrived only last week, a 13B rotary drag car the crew had been wanting for some time. Now it heads to Bradenton Motorsports Park so George can get comfortable behind the wheel before the World Cup Finals. He admits he is a little nervous. The first shakedown pass brings smaller surprises: an emblem falls off and the trunk pops open.
Then comes the mistake in the title. On the second run George reaches for third and finds first instead, what racers call a money shift, the kind of accidental downshift that can spin an engine far past its limit. The onboard camera catches his panic. "I just money-shifted Cheesecake!" he says. Cleetus, watching from the lanes, first guesses the engine saw 15,000 rpm and shouts that George "did a 1-2-1."
The car restarts, and the laptop puts the peak at roughly 11,600 rpm. Cleetus reckons a rotary is about the only engine that lets you get away with it, and the comments agree: with no valves or connecting rods to bend, the "Dorito" of the description lives on. The comment section filled faster than on a usual first day for the channel, much of it gentle ribbing of George, with suggestions to rename the car Acorn, after his surname McNutt.
In between, there is workshop texture: Jackstand Jimmy measures two-stroke oil for the fuel with a baby bottle. And George gets the practice he came for. His third pass is clean, a 9.28-second quarter mile at over 129 mph on wastegate boost, and he climbs out shouting, "All damned day Cheesecake, baby!"
