Democrats take control of Congress and Senate in U.S. midterm elections

Hakeem Jeffries calls it "the Great American Comeback." In CHCH News' brief midterm recap, his victory address follows the announcement that Democrats have won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The report puts Jeffries on course to become the first Black man to serve as House Speaker. He promises that House Democrats will deliver for the American people when they take office in January, framing the result as a rejection of extremism and corruption.

CHCH's Short reached about 168,000 views in 11 hours, far beyond the Hamilton broadcaster's usual start for this format. Its concise account moves from voters casting ballots to Democratic gains in Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kansas, Iowa and Ohio, before closing with the congressional seat tallies.

For CHCH's Canadian audience, the result also opens a cross-border question. In a separate interview, anchor Matt Ingram speaks with University of Toronto political analyst Drew Fagan about what the changed Congress means for Canada, trade negotiations and relations with the United States.
