Hegseth gets defensive as Republicans blame him for the midterm results
A federal judge has halted construction of President Trump's proposed triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery while legal disputes proceed, CBS News reports.
The planned 250-foot structure brings a separate controversy into Nancy Cordes's account of the post-election fallout in Washington. Her report describes backlash from veterans and includes a critic arguing that the arch would disturb the peace owed to those buried nearby. Cordes also reports on Trump's effort to designate the Oval Office a national landmark.
The construction dispute follows the report's opening focus: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's response to Republicans blaming him for their midterm losses. According to Cordes, Republican Representative Thomas Massie plans to seek an impeachment vote over Hegseth's handling of the ongoing war with Iran.
"They attack me, they attack us, because we are effective," Hegseth says in footage included by CBS. He also asks for more defense funding and insists he will not back down.
Cordes closes by examining reactions from Ron DeSantis, Ted Cruz and JD Vance as attention turns toward the next presidential campaign.
