LIVE: Explaining results behind Democrats’ House flip and where key Senate races stand
Donald Trump's legislative agenda faces a new obstacle: CBS News projects that Democrats will reclaim the House of Representatives. Its election special pairs that result with a separate question still taking shape, which party will control the Senate.
Anthony Salvanto, the network's executive director of elections and surveys, and congressional correspondent Caitlin Huey-Burns lead the analysis, joined by Democratic and Republican pollsters. The broadcast brings polling and results together rather than offering only a succession of victory speeches.
The special drew about 134,000 views in its first six hours, already well beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for longer videos.
House control matters even without a Senate majority: federal legislation generally needs approval from both chambers before reaching the president. A Democratic House would therefore give the opposition a powerful say in what Trump can pass.
Separate CBS uploads show the Senate results arriving state by state. The network projects Republican Ashley Moody winning in Florida, Republican Harriet Hageman winning in Wyoming and Democrat John Hickenlooper winning reelection in Colorado. Those individual calls are not yet a verdict on control of the chamber.
