British man soon to complete walk around the world

Walking around the world has also meant getting in the water for Karl Bushby. CBS Chicago's report shows the British adventurer swimming across the English Channel as his Goliath Expedition approaches its final stretch home.

The journey began in 1998 and has taken him across South America, North America, Asia and Europe. The station's brief "Eye on Your World" segment compresses decades of travel into a route map, expedition footage and an interview with a man who sounds considerably less awed by himself than the itinerary might suggest.

"Realize you're probably capable of more than you think," Bushby says.

The report describes encounters and crossings that put that thought in perspective: facing a polar bear on the way to Russia, and a swim across the Caspian Sea. This is a walk whose obstacles have not all been on land.

The Short drew about 55,000 views in its first twelve hours, far beyond the station's usual early audience for this format. In the comments, viewers ask how he negotiated the Darién Gap, suggest a movie and contrast his expedition with their own reluctance to walk to the mailbox.

Asked what message he would give others, Bushby doesn't offer a complicated expedition philosophy: "Yeah, you can. Cuz I'm nothing special. Dream big."
