A lightweight Morgan and a towering INEOS Grenadier don't look like natural racing companions. Under their bonnets, though, they share a family connection: BMW's turbocharged straight-six, also powering the M240i and Toyota GR Supra beside them.
That's the premise of carwow's new "BMW M240i v Supra v Morgan: DRAG RACE", which has drawn roughly 70,000 views in a little over two hours. Rather than comparing badges alone, Mat Watson and the team show what happens when the same engine family goes to work in radically different machines.
Mat takes the Morgan, Sam drives the BMW, Joe has the Supra and Alex gets the Grenadier. The off-roader has been tuned and lightened, giving it the most power here, but it still weighs more than twice as much as the Morgan. The BMW brings all-wheel-drive traction; the sports cars send their power to the rear wheels.
The tests move from a standing start to rolling acceleration, an exhaust sound check and a hard-braking comparison. There are mechanical distractions along the way: Joe reports failed launch control, the Grenadier reaches its speed limiter, and Mat's side mirror twists backwards in the wind.
The Morgan also requires an unscheduled pit stop. Its side windows rattle and catch the air badly enough that a technician removes them before the testing continues. By the brake test, Mat and Sam are out on foot inspecting the cars' finishing positions, with the Morgan's long bonnet becoming part of the discussion.
