Mackenzie Crook's homunculi bring Small Prophets to Apple TV at forty times the usual pace
The trailer is introducing American viewers to a BBC comedy that many in the comments have already watched, with Michael Palin in the cast.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 347,322 views a day, 38 times a normal first day on this channel (9,100).
Small Prophets — Official Trailer | Apple TV
Small Prophets already has a following in Britain, and it showed up fast under Apple TV's new trailer. Fifteen hours after it went up, the trailer had passed 280,000 views. That is a first-day pace close to forty times what this channel's uploads usually manage.
The show comes from Mackenzie Crook, who also appears in it. Readers may know him as Gareth from the original British Office, or as the man behind Detectorists, his quiet comedy about two metal-detecting friends. The premise here is stranger. Michael Sleep's partner Clea disappeared seven years ago. Then his father hands him an old recipe involving rainwater, horse manure and a fair amount of alchemy. Michael uses it to grow homunculi, tiny spirits said to see the future, and puts one question to them: will he ever see Clea again? Pearce Quigley, Lauren Patel and Sir Michael Palin are in the cast.
The comments read like a meeting of people who have already seen it. Many mention watching it on the BBC, and the most liked one jokes about coming back for the trailer after finishing the series. Detectorists comes up again and again, and so does Palin's name. Several viewers hoped the trailer meant a second season and found it was the first one, arriving in a new country.
It premieres on Apple TV on October 7. Apple's UK subscribers will have to wait until 2027.
