BBC Comedy's Tom Cruise clip runs eleven times its usual start while its twin barely moves
John Bishop put a question to Graham Norton's sofa and left the answer to the audience, who have turned the comments into an open survey of their own routines.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 192,396 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (17,862).
What’s Tom Cruise trying to say about the UK?👀🤣 - BBC
BBC Comedy put the same Graham Norton Show moment up twice on September 30. One copy, labeled with the show's name, has gathered fewer than 5,000 views. The other, titled simply "What’s Tom Cruise trying to say about the UK?👀🤣 - BBC", passed 159,000 in its first 16 hours. That is around eleven times what a new video on the channel usually draws in a full day.
According to the description, the setup is John Bishop asking the sofa a tricky question, with the answer left for viewers to guess in the comments. They took the invitation. The comment section has become a confession booth about washing: people listing how often they shower, a few naming the figure they think the clip lands on, others insisting that anyone who claims a strict daily routine is not telling the truth. Florence Pugh gets a small thread of her own.
The sofa was full. Cruise was there to talk about his transformation in Digger, Alejandro González Iñárritu's apocalyptic satire. Pugh came for Netflix's new adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden, and Lolly Adefope for her stage turn as Mary Todd Lincoln in the comedy Oh, Mary! Bishop was promoting Wisdom of the Crowd, a new BBC quiz he hosts.
The same booking produced another hit for the channel. Bishop's story about a New York audience member who took him for Ukrainian, posted the same day, has passed 110,000 views. It is well ahead of the Colin from Accounts and Claudia Winkleman clips from earlier in the week.
