Video taking off 19x its usual first day

Graham Norton's sofa outdraws Strictly and The Traitors on the BBC channel

The Tom Cruise clip has passed 120,000 views in thirteen hours, while the trails for the BBC's big autumn shows, posted the same day, sit in the low thousands.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 171,129 views a day, 19 times a normal first day on this channel (9,100).

The BBC posted plenty on September 30. There was a Movie Week trail for Strictly Come Dancing, a Graeme Hall clip billed as "The Dogfather" and a first look at The Celebrity Traitors players before the series begins. Each is still in the low thousands of views. The upload that took off came from Friday-night chat: "What's Tom Cruise trying to say about the UK? 👀🤣" from The Graham Norton Show.

It went past 123,000 views in its first thirteen hours, close to nineteen times what a BBC upload usually draws in a whole first day. It is the third clip from the same episode to find a crowd, after Florence Pugh's accents and John Bishop's New York story. Together they have the whole channel running well above its usual daily pace.

The guest list explains part of the pull. Cruise is promoting the apocalyptic satire Digger. Pugh is in Netflix's new East of Eden. Lolly Adefope is playing Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary!, and Bishop is presenting the new BBC quiz Wisdom of the Crowd. The question he puts to the sofa is the reason the comment section has filled with people working out how often they wash.

The rest of the comments wander, in the way a good chat show does. One viewer in the United States likes a host who lets his guests finish their sentences. Another wants Pugh on the same sofa as Kate Winslet. A few have noticed Graham's suit.

What viewers say

  • I Love this show for so many reasons. As someone in the US, it’s such a breath of fresh air compared to American hosts who constantly interrupt their guests.
  • We need Florence Pugh and Kate Winslet together. Pure chaos highly likely. If you want to really push it, add Jennifer Lawrence.
