Miles or kilometers? A Rogue Heroes fuel blunder races ahead on SBS On Demand
The comments have become a planning meeting, full of siphoning schemes and arguments over which side of the conversion to blame.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 131,959 views a day, 68 times a normal first day on this channel (1,943).
Imperial vs metric confusion | Rogue Heroes
Eighteen hours after it went up, a short scene from Rogue Heroes had close to 118,000 views. That is a big number for SBS On Demand, where a new clip usually gathers around two thousand on its first day. This one is running at nearly seventy times that pace.
The joke is in the title. The clip turns on a convoy, a fuel supply and a unit conversion that has gone wrong. The line the channel chose to quote is an officer asking, with growing dread, whether anyone thought to bring petrol trucks. Rogue Heroes is Steven Knight's drama about the wartime birth of the SAS, and much of it plays out in the North African desert, where a misread distance is not a small mistake.
Under the video, viewers have started fixing the problem themselves. Several suggest stopping the convoy, siphoning fuel into fewer vehicles and doubling up the men. Others argue over who should take the blame, the French or the miles, and point out that most of the world measures in kilometers anyway. A few wonder why an expedition would carry only just enough fuel to arrive. More than one person asks whether Rogue Heroes is a film or a series.
That last question may explain part of the reach: the clip seems to be finding people who have never seen the show. The rest of the week's uploads, a Silverchair archive clip from 1994, the roulette scene from Run Lola Run and a preview of The Jury: Skeleton in the Garden, stayed in the low thousands or below.
