Stephen Fry in her head, a barking dog out loud: Fern Brady's accent clip flies
Her short from The Comedy Circuit went past the day's Romesh Ranganathan clip from the same series within eleven hours, and the comments soon turned to Scottish voices.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 47,398 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (4,266).
In Fern Brady's Head: Stephen Fry... Reality: A Barking Dog 😂 #thecomedycircuit
A new short on BBC Sounds usually finds a few thousand viewers on its first day. Fern Brady's took eleven hours to pass 31,000, and it is heading for about eleven times that usual start.
The clip comes from The Comedy Circuit, the channel's run of monthly stand-up specials from British comics. The title sets up the gap: Stephen Fry in her head, a barking dog in reality. The tags point to accents, Scotland and England. The description calls her impression of an English friend savage, so the barking dog seems to be what lands on the other side of the border. Brady grew up in Scotland, and her voice has been part of her act on panel shows and in stand-up for years.
It is not the only Comedy Circuit clip from that day. Romesh Ranganathan acting out his clubbing years went up at the same time and has drawn well under the Brady short, as has a Graham Norton podcast clip about swearing behind the wheel. A Spice Girls trailer from the new Eras podcast has so far barely started.
The comment section is small, but it keeps coming back to the voice. One viewer who married a Glaswegian writes about how loud the accent can be and how much they love the sound of it, and others say they enjoy her angle on the world. A Scot imitating an English friend imitating a Scot is apparently a subject people want to talk about.
