Sting, Rick Rude and an atomic drop wake up WCW's vault

Eleven uploads ran from a 1998 Goldberg title defense against Raven to a full Nitro from London in November 2000.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

WCW is an archive now, and it behaves like one: eleven uploads in seven days, every one of them reaching back a quarter century or more. The one moving fastest is also the shortest. "Sting sends Rick Rude to Atomic Drop City...Ouch!" passed 80,000 views within its first eleven hours, and the full six-man tag it comes from, Sting and the Steiner Brothers against Rude, Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton on WCW Worldwide, is riding along behind it.

The week's most watched upload was a title match from Thunder on October 1, 1998, with Goldberg defending the World Heavyweight Championship and his undefeated streak against Raven under Raven's Rules. The comments are less about the result than about the details around it. Many viewers miss Raven's original entrance music, which has been dubbed over. Others want to know why the uploads jumped a full year of Goldberg matches. Chris Kanyon's name is in the tags, and he comes up in the comments too.

The rest of the week leaned on the same era: a 1998 recap of the WCW and nWo storyline, Scott Steiner beating Ric Flair, a clip of Steve Austin's old WCW days as "The Natural" (going by the title's nickname), and Monday Nitro from London, where Flair opened a tag tournament for a title shot.

Daily views ran a little under the usual pace, and the channel added about 2,000 subscribers. Among wrestling and combat channels of its size, WCW sits third by subscribers but further down by views gained, while Undertaker's channel had the big week and ran above its normal pace.

  • I was a huge Raven fan back in the day, listening to Marylin Manson and watching WCW. I was one of the few kids in school who hated Goldberg for winning the US title.
