Buying something and paying by card should be uncontroversial behaviour in an electronics shop. For Ben, it's an intolerable interruption: another customer is talking over his dialogue.

Viva La Dirt League's "Ben's not the only customer" has drawn about 339,000 views since yesterday. The staged TechTown comedy starts with a familiar retail headache, a customer demanding a discount he isn't entitled to, then lets that customer become aware of the sketch around him.

Alan explains that being employed somewhere else doesn't qualify Ben for this shop's staff discount. But Ben has prepared a punchline, and Rowan serving a woman at the adjacent checkout is spoiling his setup. He wants to know what her comedy hook is. Apparently, simply purchasing an item isn't enough.

Then out comes a wizard's staff. Ben's planned wordplay is now a prop he's obliged to explain, which does little to restore his authority. When he demands that the employees choose between him and the ordinary shopper, both choose her immediately.

Viewers are picking up on Ben's increasing awareness of the camera, with some likening him to a self-aware game character. Others argue that someone who spends this much time at TechTown deserves the staff discount after all. The sketch even lets the artificiality spill into its outtakes: Alan starts T-posing behind the counter, prompting Rowan to remind him that he's on camera.
