TV Guide finds Succession's musical grandeur behind HBO's War
Director Ben Taylor and creator George Kay name film and television scores that helped shape their musical references.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
HBO's War Drew Inspiration From Succession's Score
Ben Taylor has a warning about borrowing television's grand musical gestures: "As soon as you bring the timpanis out, you're in trouble."
That lightly delivered caution comes in TV Guide's only new upload of the week, "HBO's War Drew Inspiration From Succession's Score". Asked by interviewer Kat Moon about television influences, Taylor singles out Nicholas Britell's Succession music and its ability to give family conflict operatic scale. George Kay adds a different kind of tension: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's score for The Social Network, alongside the paranoid, insistent music of Punch-Drunk Love.
It's a small behind-the-scenes conversation rather than a big cast game, and it has found a modest audience of fewer than 400 views. Across the channel, subscribers stayed unchanged and today's viewing is less than half the usual daily level. Nearby in film-and-TV coverage, Du Cinema had a much busier week, while Rotten Tomatoes also drew a larger weekly audience.
The channel's busiest individual uploads right now come from earlier interviews. Ruaridh Mollica's account of spending ten hours in a pool with Paul Bettany for VisionQuest has the most daily momentum, followed by Shaheen Jafargholi discussing a favorite scene from Tough Guy. A cast-and-director conversation about building a dance-movie marathon rounds out that group: TV Guide's interview archive is doing more of the daily work than its new musical detour.
