Corridor Crew explains why Transformers' Driller needed ILM's entire render farm
A skyscraper-crushing Decepticon becomes a story about the extraordinary computing effort behind Dark of the Moon.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,872,725 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (159,465).
Transformers 3 Almost BROKE ILM
Optimus Prime was already complicated. Then the effects artists had to build a mechanical creature capable of wrapping itself around a skyscraper.
Corridor Crew's Short, "Transformers 3 Almost BROKE ILM", traces that escalation to the Driller in Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011). It has drawn more than a million views in roughly half a day, an unusually fast start for the channel's Shorts.
The studio discussion starts with the thousands of separate pieces that make up Optimus, moves through the even more elaborate Devastator, and lands on the Driller's more than 80,000 components. But complexity was only part of the problem. As the speaker explains, making the film in stereoscopic 3D meant rendering separate views for each eye, doubling an already enormous computing workload.
According to Corridor Crew, ILM's solution was to pause rendering on every other film and give its entire render farm, the computers that turn digital scenes into finished images, to Transformers for a weekend. The title's near-disaster is a deadline-and-capacity story, not an account of computers physically breaking.
Viewers are discussing the machinery behind the spectacle: some recall taking these effects for granted as children, while others single out the tiny mechanical details. One recurring joke gives the exhausted render farm a voice. Behind the Driller's destruction, Corridor Crew finds a roomful of computers with nothing else on their schedule.

I have always admired the tiny details of the Transformers films. Definitely added to the realism
@sydneyslaughter7163See it on YouTubeCrazy to think a lot of people dismiss CGI as being "cheap and easy" because "it doesn't look real" when you have stuff like this being an absolute nightmare of a cyclopean task for animators.
