Carp in the bathtub and blood candy: Tom from Texas on Russian food
His look at the dishes that surprise Americans became the week's most watched upload, and its comment section turned into a lesson in Slavic Christmas dinners.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Things about Russian food that are WILD
What does an American married into a Russian family find wild at the dinner table? Tom from Texas, whose channel runs on life with his Russian wife and her country, put the question into "Things about Russian food that are WILD," and it became the most watched of his six uploads this week, past 175,000 views.
The comments explain a good part of the video. Carp is the big subject: many viewers cannot understand why Americans call it a trash fish, and people from Poland, the Czech Republic and other Slavic countries write in to say it is a Christmas dinner staple. One commenter adds that keeping it in the bathtub is real, but for hours, not days. Others bring up bird's milk, the chocolate-covered sweet that the Poles know as ptasie mleczko, and Gematogen, the childhood candy made with blood, which one viewer still buys.
The rest of the week stayed in the same world: the uncle who earns $6,000 a year and, the title says, is happier than most Americans, a bear behind the wheel, and two Monday uploads. One of them, "Things that haven't changed about Russia since the USSR," is the channel's fastest video right now after only half a day online.
Even so, the whole channel is running at well under half its usual daily views. That is a familiar picture among the travel channels near its size: Scarlet & Seth, Sailing Zatara and Dabble and Travel are slower too, while Chris Must List and Ame in a van are running ahead of their usual pace.
