No music, no cuts: Living The Van Life's first UNCUT episode is an hour-long steak dinner

Chad sets up the pullout kitchen in town and cooks start to finish in real time, and longtime viewers say it feels like the early days.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

"UNCUT: Let's Cook a Steak in an Urban Setting" is exactly what its description promises: no cinematic edit, no music, no cuts, just about an hour of Chad pulling out the van's kitchen somewhere in town and cooking dinner from start to finish. It is billed as the first episode of a new series, LTVL UNCUT, and it was the only upload of the week on Living The Van Life.

That is a change of pace for a channel that began with a 1991 Westfalia in 2011 and grew on polished trips through the backcountry. The comments are full of people who have been around since then and say the raw format brings back the old days. Others are trading kitchen tips: cook the eggs in the steak juices, buy the blue shop towels that won't fall apart. And one couple says their own Sprinter build is three months away and they are taking notes.

The new episode passed 30,000 views in three days and is moving several times faster than anything else on the channel. Behind it, two recent Campfire Sessions keep simmering: a Dutch oven chili cooked under the Sonoran Desert sky in western Arizona, and a campfire steak that makes a neat pair with the new urban one.

Overall, the channel ran a little slower than usual, with subscribers holding steady. Most of the travel channels near its size were also below their usual pace. Chris Must List was the exception, running well above his normal days.
