Nilay wants the touchscreen MacBook, just not for touch

The Vergecast considers what Apple's new laptop means for the iPad, alongside a week of hands-on coverage and archival contrasts.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Buying a touchscreen laptop doesn't necessarily mean wanting to touch it. In "The delightfully messy state of Apple gadgets | The Vergecast", Nilay Patel plans to buy the new MacBook, but the touchscreen isn't his reason. He and David Pierce use that distinction to explore Apple's increasingly overlapping devices, including where the iPad fits between them.

That conversation gives The Verge's busy week a useful thread. Across fifteen uploads, Apple coverage ranged from "Hands-on with Apple's first touchscreen MacBook Pro" to a Vergecast discussion with Antonio Di Benedetto about touch-friendly macOS changes and whether the laptop and tablet are converging.

The week's biggest upload supplied the historical friction. "Steve Jobs on touchscreen MacBooks" has reached about 1.7 million views, pairing Jobs' warning about the fatigue of reaching toward a vertical display with footage of hands scrolling and editing on the new machine. It also remains the channel's busiest video right now.

The comments turn that design argument into everyday experience. Several viewers describe owning touchscreen computers and rarely remembering to use the feature. Others make the case for occasional scrolling, drawing or a hinge that lets a laptop become a tablet. The disagreement is less about whether touch works than when it earns its place.

The channel added roughly 10,000 subscribers over the week, although daily viewing is currently around half its usual pace. Nearby gadget channels CNET and Dave2D also have quieter-than-usual daily viewing, while HTX Studio posted a substantial weekly subscriber gain.

Apple didn't occupy every microphone. Jennifer Pattison Tuohy examined Amazon's new Echo devices, including a digital photo frame, while "Has Google Zero come for… Google?" is among The Verge's uploads gathering the most views now.

  • My old work computer was a touch screen. I didn’t know until I was showing a coworker something and I accidentally touched the screen. I was like “cool”. Then I never used it again.

  • If it has a 360 hinge and can be used with a stylus i can see its benefit. But i think this won't be a benefit for most
  • He’s right but now having the option in ADDITION to a horizontal trackpad is a nice advantage

  • In my life I've owned a couple of laptops and even desktops with touch screens. I used the touch screen functionality exactly 4 times. Not on each of them, but across all of those machines. Steve knew what he was talking about

  • I actually love touchscreens on laptops. I don’t use it all the time but for documents and pictures and scrolling or TAKING THE SAT it’s so nice

  • I remember when touchscreen laptops were all the rage during the Windows 8 era. I'd use the touchscreen a couple of times, then forget my laptop even had it. There were situations where it was nice to have, especially on laptops that could fold into a tablet, but the UI still felt pretty bad since a lot of the buttons were clearly designed for mouse clicks rather than touch.
  • yeah, but touchscreen laptops are still laptops, meaning you can still navigate around using the track pad/mouse, and keyboard. you can touch the screen occasionally in a drawing app or a game or something.
  • He's right. I say this as a Surface Pro user. The touchscreen is useful for scrolling content, and fantastic when using it as a tablet. That's it

  • Touch controls are a good option to have, they aren’t a replacement of the keyboard but an extra function that is useful to have when you feel like you need it
