Jennifer Pattison Tuohy tours Apple's $299 HomeView, from Snoopy to Siri
The Verge's hands-on Short covers mounts, faces, cameras and recipes, while its comment section keeps asking why an iPad wouldn't do.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 415,686 views a day, 42 times a normal first day on this channel (9,932).
All features of Apple's new HomeView
A recipe sent from an iPhone lands on a countertop display, ready to walk the cook through each step. "It has a really neat cooking integration feature," Jennifer Pattison Tuohy says near the end of The Verge's tour of HomeView, the smart display Apple unveiled at its Welcome Home event in New York.
The Short, posted just hours ago, packs a lot into under three minutes. The device hangs on a wall or sits on an aluminum speaker base. It controls thermostats, fans and locks through Apple's Home app, shows live feeds from HomeKit cameras, plays Apple Music and works as an intercom. Swipe down and Siri answers. A 12-megapixel camera recognizes faces, so personal calendars and messages appear only for the right person.
Then there are the faces: minimalist clocks, photos, a lava lamp and Snoopy. Apple Watch owners will know the beagle. He arrived as a watch face with watchOS 10 in 2023, which may explain why the most liked joke underneath compares HomeView to a much bigger Apple Watch.
The tour drew roughly a quarter-million views in its first ten hours, far past what a Verge Short usually gets across a whole day, and the comment section is already more than thirty times busier than a usual first day. Much of it circles one question: why a separate device? Viewers propose a wall-mounted iPad mini, a Home focus mode for the iPad they already own, or a speaker dock in the spirit of Google's Pixel Tablet. One describes an iPad that has lived on the fridge for years, showing nothing but the Home app. Others want to know why the wall version costs the same as the one with a speaker, and one asks for a physical camera cover.
The Verge covered the event from several angles. A first look at Apple's Home Collection, the cameras, doorbell, lock and thermostats made with LG and Schneider Electric, is also off to a fast start, and so is a live show in which Tuohy joins Nilay Patel and David Pierce to take viewers' questions about Apple's bid for the whole house.
