"I Am an October 8 Jew": Olivia Reingold tells her own story on camera

A day after the third anniversary of the Hamas attack, the Free Press reporter explains how it, and the antisemitism that followed, woke her religious identity.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

A usual day for The Free Press brings in around 80,000 views. Lately it has been closer to a third of that, and the week's five uploads read like a tour of Bari Weiss's newsroom: a French courtroom, a therapist's couch, an execution chamber and a New York election.

The one people are opening is the most personal. In "I Am an October 8 Jew," staff reporter Olivia Reingold turns an essay she wrote earlier this year into a short film about how the attack on Israel and the rise in antisemitism afterward drew her toward a religious identity she had not lived before. It passed 30,000 views in its first 17 hours. Many in the comments welcome her home, some write in Hebrew, and several describe the same turn in their own lives after that October.

The rest of the week moved more slowly. Dora Moutot, a French feminist activist, explains why a television debate about what makes a woman left her, as the description puts it, with a criminal conviction and the risk of new charges. Psychotherapist Joe Nucci, author of Psychobabble, talks about therapy-speak and the screen time behind it. Noah Bernstein calls an executioner to ask why botched executions happen, and Saritha Komatireddy, the Republican hoping to unseat Letitia James as New York's attorney general, makes her case on crime.

Among news channels of similar size, most are running below their usual pace too; The Financial Express is the exception, with a very big week. The Free Press added about a thousand subscribers over the seven days, and a two-week-old report by Esther Krakue on Sweden's immigration crackdown keeps finding viewers, now well past 240,000 views.
