Rubio's 'urgent plea to save Western Civilization' draws comments from Greece to Australia
LiveNOW from FOX carried the Secretary of State's speech in Greece without commentary, and it gathered thousands of comments in half a day on a channel otherwise running well below its usual pace.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,385,102 views a day, 13 times a normal first day on this channel (105,891).
Rubio delivers urgent plea to save Western Civilization
LiveNOW from FOX is having a slow stretch. The whole channel is drawing about a third of its usual daily audience, and most of the big news channels near its size are flat or quieter too. One video went the other way.
It is Marco Rubio's speech in Greece on Wednesday, posted under the title "Rubio delivers urgent plea to save Western Civilization." The description says the Secretary of State called for a renewal of Western civilization and urged America's allies to stand together against what he describes as the decline of the West. In keeping with the channel's own promise of limited commentary, the speech runs on its own, with no anchors talking over it.
It came close to a million views in its first twelve hours, far beyond what a regular LiveNOW video usually manages in a full day. The comment section moved even faster, at roughly thirty times the pace of a usual first day. Much of it comes from outside the United States: viewers write in from Australia, Germany and Canada, and Greek and Greek American viewers are pleased to hear their history from an American podium.
Rubio, a former Florida senator, has brought foreign policy to this channel many times. The same day also gave LiveNOW a fast Short on a different story: President Trump saying he would speak with Vladimir Putin "very soon" about a suspected pneumonic plague death at a research institute in Siberia.
