A crash axe in the cockpit: LiveNOW on the co-pilot identified in the flydubai attack
A security analyst joined the newsroom to walk through what officials in the UAE call a terrorist attack on a Dubai-Tel Aviv flight, and the comment section filled up about five times faster than usual.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 785,157 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (70,550).
ATTEMPTED HIJACKING: Co-pilot identified in FlyDubai incident
Who attacked the captain of an Israel-bound flydubai flight? According to the United Arab Emirates Prosecutor General, it was the man in the seat beside him. LiveNOW from FOX's segment on the co-pilot's identification passed 800,000 views in about a day. A new video on the channel usually draws around 70,000 in that time.
The flight left Dubai for Tel Aviv early on Wednesday, September 30, with 174 passengers aboard. The prosecutor general says the co-pilot used the cockpit's crash axe on the captain and tried to take control of the aircraft. UAE officials have called it a terrorist attack. Several passengers forced their way into the cockpit and helped restrain him, and the crew landed the plane safely in Saudi Arabia. Israel's prime minister described what those passengers did as an act of tremendous courage. Investigators are still trying to establish whether the co-pilot acted alone.
National security analyst Hal Kempfer joins anchor Alexandra Goldberg to discuss the case. Much of the conversation underneath is about the coverage itself. Viewers question the careful legal wording, ask why no photo of the accused is shown, and debate how a cockpit should be built when the same locked door and emergency axe that protect a crew can also be turned against it. Some want the injured captain's part in the story told more fully.
It was a day of airplane news for the channel. Reports on the medical jet that went missing off Nantucket with six people aboard, including the discovery of a debris field, drew several times the usual audience. A segment on Iran's conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz did the same.
