A Japanese woman found dead in an Okinawa hotel, and a U.S. Marine under arrest
Local officials called the killing "extremely brutal and heinous," and ABC News' short report became the most watched of the channel's Sunday uploads.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 413,641 views a day, 18 times a normal first day on this channel (22,330).
U.S. Marine arrested on suspicion of murder in Japan
A Japanese woman's body was found in a hotel in Okinawa, and a U.S. service member has been arrested on suspicion of murder and robbery. Local officials described the killing as an "extremely brutal and heinous incident."
ABC News posted the short report on Sunday. Nine hours later it had passed 236,000 views, on a channel where a new video usually ends its whole first day at around 22,000. The same story also ran in that evening's World News Tonight with David Muir, a few minutes into the broadcast.
Much of the comment section is about where the case should be handled, and many viewers say it belongs in Japan's courts. A large group objects to the report's footage of Marines working on a helicopter, pointing out that those service members have nothing to do with the case. Others bring up earlier cases involving American troops on the island, and some send condolences to the woman's family.
It led a busy Sunday for the network. The This Week Powerhouse Roundtable, with Doug Heye arguing that the Republicans' midterm map is shrinking while the Democrats' is expanding, came close behind. Cornell president Michael Kotlikoff's video message to his campus and a report on a record-breaking heat wave in Southern California also drew several times the channel's usual first day. A week after the full This Week episode led the channel, as we reported here, it is the roundtable on its own that kept the show near the top.
