Overcrowded classrooms and missing teachers: Channel 4 News on France's student protests

The Short drew hundreds of comments in its first hours, and many of them argue over whether 'protest' is even the right word.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 191,169 views a day, 14 times a normal first day on this channel (13,817).

Eight hours after it went up, "The truth behind France's student protests" had close to 100,000 views. That is a start Channel 4 News Shorts rarely get, and it came on a day when the channel as a whole was running well below its usual pace.

The Short puts the question in plain terms: France's young people are angry, and their protests are turning increasingly violent, but what is driving them onto the streets? The answer in the description comes from the students themselves: overcrowded classrooms, missing teachers and schools struggling to cope. As France faces pressure to cut public spending, they fear being asked to do more with less. The video also follows how the protests have become political ground, with the government and the opposition blaming each other for the violence. With a presidential election looming, a fight over schools has widened into an argument about public services and money, and the students say they are not stopping.

The comments came in fast: close to 400 in eight hours, where a Short here usually collects about 40 over its whole first day. Much of the talk turns on one word, with many viewers insisting the scenes are riots rather than protests, and others doubting that schools are the real cause. Some measure the class sizes against their own. One older viewer remembers classes of 35 as the minimum back in the 1970s, and another passes on a French friend's comparison with 1968.

Two other Shorts from the same day also ran well ahead of usual. One shows Christa Pike speaking after surviving two lethal injections in Tennessee. The other covers Kemi Badenoch's proposed "Back to Work" payment card, which would stop long-term unemployed claimants from spending benefits on alcohol, cigarettes and gambling. Of the three, the one from across the Channel, about French classrooms, went furthest.
