Before Ilona Bagorda learned to speak in kindergarten, she communicated through sign language. Now she and her sister Fiona make short online videos teaching others the basics, with a message that communication should require effort from both sides.
France's TF1 INFO follows Ilona and her mother, Sandrine Noël, into a sporting goods store, where Ilona asks staff for help finding flashlights. Sandrine, who is deaf, explains through signing that making herself understood can be difficult. She sometimes asks her daughter to speak because she worries people will laugh at the variations in her voice.
The report then moves to the family's home and Ilona's bilingual school. Ilona recalls knowing only how to sign before kindergarten, where she learned spoken language quickly. At home with her friend Louisa, signing becomes something to share and teach rather than simply a way to navigate a shopping trip.
That is also the purpose of the videos Ilona makes with Fiona. Ilona argues that hearing people should adapt to deaf people too, rather than always expecting adaptation in the other direction. Fiona adds that they are not asking everyone to master sign language perfectly.
The report drew roughly 963,000 views since yesterday. Among the responses are calls to teach basic signing in schools, extending the sisters' practical question: how much easier could an ordinary encounter become if more people knew a few signs?
