Akebi, the chocolate vine, and a first bite viewers say came too soon

Tasty Table's whispered tasting of a purple pod drew a comment section of amateur botanists, and the channel passed 410 million total views along the way.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Tasty Table passed 410 million total views over the week, and the video doing the most to get it there is a purple pod with no name in its title. "The strangest exotic fruit" went up on October 1 and is past 150,000 views. The comments filled the gap the title left: viewers name it akebi, the Japanese chocolate vine, and some say it was bitten too early, since a ripe pod splits open by itself to show the soft, jelly-like pulp inside. Several also want to know why everyone is whispering.

Three more Shorts followed: a second strange-fruit tasting, a street-food "Legendary soup?" and "Secrets for choosing fruit," a berry guide that has picked up quickly in its first hours.

The channel as a whole is moving at roughly half its usual daily pace, with about a thousand new subscribers on the week. Most cooking channels near its size are also running below their usual pace, from Ryantagcoffee to Alpine Butcher. Cooking With Volk is the exception, well above its own normal.

Tasty Table still landed mid-pack in views gained, carried mostly by one unripe pod and a lot of people who knew its name.
