Alvin Zhou posted nothing new over the week, and it barely mattered. His channel, which describes itself as stories about the people who make the food we love, kept its usual pace almost to the view, and nearly all of that came from one place: a buffet in Pennsylvania farm country.
"The Largest Buffet In America Serves 10,000+ People A Day" is three weeks old and has passed ten million views. Its subject is Shady Maple Smorgasbord in Lancaster County, and the description lays out the scale: 275 feet of buffets, 70 hot items, 40 salad items, 40 desserts and 70 drinks. But the film is pitched less at the size than at the family behind it, a business that spans generations, cooks from family recipes and leans on the farmland around it. The music credits include "Dusk in Mondstadt", a track from the game Genshin Impact, which fits a filmmaker who says his editing owes a lot to video games and anime.
The buffet is doing almost all the work. Further back, Angelo's in Philadelphia, the pizzeria at 9th and Fitzwater whose ribeye cheesesteak with Cooper Sharp cheese is billed as the city's best, and Milly's in Chicago, where Robert's pan pizza sells out in 45 minutes, keep drawing a few thousand viewers a day each, months after they went up.
About 3,000 new subscribers arrived over the week. Among food channels close in size, Cooking With Volk is the one running well above its usual pace, while Ryantagcoffee and Tasty Table are quieter than normal.
