Emergency crews contained a nitric acid spill in Krefeld after a tanker overturned overnight on a highway entrance ramp, Germany's ARD public-broadcasting news service tagesschau reports.
The truck was carrying 23 metric tons of highly corrosive nitric acid, and nearly half its load escaped, according to the report. The accident happened in Krefeld, northwest of Düsseldorf in western Germany.
Sirens woke residents, while the NINA emergency-warning app issued an extreme chemical-danger alert identifying the Berliner Strasse entrance to the A57. The highway was closed completely, rail connections were suspended, and nearby schools and daycare centers remained shut.
The report explains why the response was extensive: nitric acid can cause severe chemical burns and blindness, while exposure to its fumes can be fatal. Around two hundred emergency personnel worked to seal the leak, collect the escaped acid and secure the scene. Specialist monitoring vehicles checked the air for pollutants.
An all-clear followed at midday after crews treated and pumped away the acid. The broadcaster reports that the driver was the only person injured; cleanup continued into the evening.
A city in North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany, northwest of Düsseldorf. It is served by the A57 motorway.
