South Korea may be heading for a relatively mild winter, but that does not mean the padded jackets can stay packed away. A seasonal forecast anticipating warmer, wetter weather has arrived just as parts of the country experience their lowest temperatures of the autumn.
South Korea's Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) reports that the Korea Meteorological Administration expects above-average temperatures and precipitation in November and December, with January also likely to be milder than usual.
The report links that outlook to an El Niño that began in May. It says tropical Pacific sea-surface temperatures have already exceeded levels recorded during the exceptionally strong episodes of 1997 and 2015. According to the report, strong El Niño conditions can bring warm, moisture-laden southerly winds into South Korea, raising both temperatures and precipitation. The weather agency expects the phenomenon to peak around December.
The qualification comes at the end: Arctic sea ice conditions and the Siberian high-pressure system could still contribute to abrupt cold waves or heavy snowfall. A warmer seasonal outlook is not a forecast of uninterrupted warmth.
That distinction is particularly relevant today. In a separate November 7 bulletin, the broadcaster reports an autumn temperature low in Seoul and other locations, with daytime conditions colder than usual and mountain rain potentially turning to snow. The winter outlook leaves plenty of room for days like these.
