Sec. Hegseth issues defiant statement amid renewed calls for impeachment
Republican support for impeaching Pete Hegseth may extend beyond the congressman pursuing it. House GOP sources expect an impeachment vote to pass, senior national security reporter Haley Britzky says in a report by CNN (Cable News Network), the United States broadcaster.
The defense secretary's response is to compare his position with Donald Trump's. In a video posted Thursday, Hegseth dismisses the articles as a "sham" and says his opponents are repeating what they tried against the president.
"Just like they tried against President Trump, twice," he says. He describes the effort as "the politics of personal destruction."
Britzky identifies Republican Representative Thomas Massie as the congressman behind the articles. Her report places the confrontation within the Republican recriminations following the midterm losses, saying many in the party blame Hegseth and his support for the war with Iran.
The report also displays Vice President JD Vance's statement: "The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night." That is Vance's explanation of the election result, rather than an established account of why voters made their choices.
Hegseth, meanwhile, defends his record by pointing to Pentagon policies against diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and portraying the Iran war as historic and courageous. His central argument is that the attacks reflect effectiveness, not failure: "They attack us, because we are effective."
